OBSTETRIC SERVICES

OVERVIEW

Obstetrics is continuous medical care provided throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
Preconception Care

Preconception care is a set of interventions designed to enhance women’s health before pregnancy. It focuses on optimising a woman’s health before she decides to conceive, including managing chronic conditions, ensuring proper nutrition, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Confirmation of a Pregnancy

A pregnancy is accurately confirmed by checking for a specific hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), in a blood sample.

Antenatal Care

Antenatal care, commonly known as prenatal care, is the healthcare a woman receives from the onset of pregnancy until delivery. It is specialised care for both mother and baby and consists of routine check-ups, professional advice, prenatal vitamin suggestions, regular screening, ultrasound scanning, and monitoring of the health of both mother and baby.

Pregnancy Ultrasound

A pregnancy ultrasound uses high-powered soundwaves to create precise images of the developing foetus. Routine ultrasound scans are performed to monitor the baby's growth and check for any complications.

Vaginal Delivery

Vaginal delivery is the safe, natural delivery of the newborn baby through the entrance of the vagina.

Caesarean Section

A Caesarean Section, widely acknowledged as a C-section or Caesar, is the surgical removal of the baby through an incision in the abdomen and uterus. Normally, a C-section is advised when it would be unsafe for the mother or baby to deliver via a vaginal delivery.

Cervical Cerclage

Cervical cerclage, or cervical stitch, is a medical procedure that entails inserting a stitch around the cervix to reduce the risk of it re-opening too soon at the time of pregnancy. As a result, this is considered a life-saving procedure to minimise the likelihood of a premature birth or late miscarriage.

Postnatal Care

Postnatal care refers to holistic medical care provided to the mother and her newborn baby after delivery. It encompasses routine clinical examinations, breastfeeding, dietary advice, and emotional support and guidance.

Professional advice, support, and routine medical examinations are crucial to ensuring the well-being of mothers and their babies.

Communities and countries and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women.
